1.3. How do I find other channels?

To find another channel on IRC, you can type in any command line:

/list *subject*

Replace the word subject with the subject in question.

Example: if the subject you want to find is -- movies -- you type:

/list *movie*

After you type this command, a new window will open in your mIRC Client, called 'Channels'. This window will start producing a list of channels, and will continue until all channels based on the subject you chose are listed. Once the list finishes listing, you 'double click' the channel of your choice from the list to join it. If you want to stop the listing, right click in the listing window and click –stop listing from the menu that pops up.

1.4. How do I find someone on IRC?

There are three commands you can use to find another User on IRC. Two are mIRC Client commands, and the third is a DALnet NickServ command and the nick must be registered with NickServ for information to be returned. Type in any command line one of the following:

/whois nickname
/uwho nickname
/nickserv info nickname

Replace nickname with the Users actual nick, and look in your 'Status Window' for the reply.

Example: if the nickname you are looking for is -- pitdog -- you type:

/whois pitdog
/uwho pitdog
/nickserv info pitdog

If you used /whois text is returned to the 'Status Window'. If you used /uwho the 'Address Book Dialog Box' is opened to the 'Info' Tab. You can get the information there, plus you can perform several commands by clicking any one of the buttons at the bottom of this 'Dialog'.

If you used the /nickserv info command, and the nick IS registered, text is returned to the 'Status Window' with information on: last seen address; last seen time; time registered; time now; options enforced; and possibly a URL (Universal Resource Locator), and an email address. If the nick is not registered with DALnet's NickServ, you will get a return to the 'Status Window' of: -NickServ- The nick pitdog is not registered. However, the nick pitdog IS registered, so you will get a return of information.

1.5. How do I get music played on IRC?

Music comes in two file types on IRC, waves and mP3s.

To get music being played on a channel you type:

!nick filename.wav or !nick filename.mp3

Example: if I were the nick that played a sound file in the channel, and you wanted it, you would type:

Let's say I played a wave called wolf.wav on the channel, you would see a script I have print something like this (although it would have color added to it, and file size, and a few other bits of information), but you will see this part for sure -- !pitdog wolf.wav -- that is the part you need. You would either type it or copy and paste it to the channel. This triggers my mIRC Client to to auto-send the file to you. Now you get a 'Dialog' that has the buttons; Accept, Ignore, and Cancel on it. You click 'Accept' and the file send begins. It will be saved to you current mIRC sound folder, which by default is -- c:\mirc\sounds.

If I played the file and it was an mp3 file, it would be the same, except it would be !pitdog wolf.mp3 and you would type, or copy and paste -- !pitdog wolf.mp3 -- to the channel, and follow the steps above.

1.6. How do I play music on IRC?

To play a wave or an mp3 on IRC, you have two options. You can play it so that only you can hear the file, and no one else will know that you have played it. To do this type:

/splay filename.wav or /splay filename.mp3

Example: using the example file from the above 'Getting a sound file', wolf.wav or wolf.mp3 , you would type: /splay wolf.wav or /splay wolf.mp3

You can also play sound files to the channel. It is possible that everyone will know that you played it, and anyone else on the channel that has the exact same file as you, will be able to hear it. To do this you type the following. We will use wolf.wav and wolf.mp3 as the example file:

/sound wolf.wav or /sound wolf.mp3

1.7 How do I download on IRC?

As of March 1, 2003 all channels devoted primarily to filesharing were closed down on the DALnet  network. Some networks still allow filesharing channels, and you will have to go to one of those if you want to use a fileserver. There is a partial list of  Networks and Servers your irc menu. In your Options Folder click  File/Options/Connect  and select another network from the dropdown menu you find there. (in newer versions of mIRC this will be under “View”) For a complete listing of all IRC networks, try http://irc.netsplit.de/networks.

1.8 How do I type colored text?

To type in colored text, you use the ctrl+k key combination, click on a color in the 'color index dialog' and type your text. Here is what that means.

Press and hold the ctrl key, then press the K key, and let them go. You should have a 'dialog box' with the color index, which are 16 boxes, each of a different color. Click one of the color boxes, and then type text, and press enter. The text should be the color of the box you clicked.

Example: let's try red text:

Press the ctrl+k key combination, and you get the 'color index dialog box'. Now click on the 4th box, which is 'red'. The 'dialog' disappears, but you see a solid square box with a 4 next to it, eg, 4. After you get the 4 in the command line, type your text. Try a simple 'hello'. If you did it correctly, this is what you will see in the command line:

4hello

If this is what you see, then press the 'enter' key, and you will see this in the channel window, or whichever window you are typing in (excluding the 'Status Window'):

hello

Remember, press ctrl+k, click a colored box, type your text, and press enter.

1.9 How to I filter all the join, part, kick, ban text out?

One of the first things you notice different about IRC as compared to Yahoo or MSN Chats is all the information that is displayed in the channels. This user has joined, this user has parted, this user was kicked, this user was banned. Yes, it can be overwhelming at first, but there is a simple fix for it.

Click on 'File' and then click 'Options' in the menu, which opens the mIRC Options Dialog. (in newer versions of mIRC this will be under View) You will see a list of catagories on the left of the Dialog. IRC is the second catagory in the list. Click on it, and now to the right of the list, the grey area of the Dialog is changed. Over on the far right, directly above the 'Help' button you see a button, 'Events' or 'Show', click it. Now you can set each event to show to the channel, show to status, or hide it. Hiding it is just that, it won’t be displayed anywhere and you will not see it. If you show it in 'Status' then it will be printed to the Status Window, which is the window you see when you first connect to IRC. (You know, that window that when you click on the 'X' it won’t close?)

Section 2 - NickServ Questions

2.1 How do I register my nick?

Before you register your nick with NickServ, make sure the nick isn't already registered. To do this type in the command line:

/nickserv info NickInQuestion

Example: if the nick in question is -- Newbie -- you would type:

/nickserv info Newbie

Look in the 'Status Window' for the reply. If NickServ returns info stating that 'the nick Newbie is not registered' then proceed with the registration by typing:

/nickserv register password email@address.com

Example: if the nick is -- Newbie -- and you want the password -- AlphaNumeric123456 -- and your email address is -- myemail@address.com -- you would type it like this:

/nickserv register AlphaNumeric123456 myemail@address.com

A few of things you need to be aware of here. First, PassWords are CaSeSeNSiTiVe. Second, alphanumeric passwords tend to be harder for hackers to 'crack'. And third, You must use a valid email address in order for DALnet to send you an email, with the 'Registration's Completion Process'. This process will require you to either click a link of the 'Authorization Code', or to copy and paste this 'Authorization Code' to the command line in mIRC. The 'Authorization Code' will look similar to this:

/msg nickserv@services.dal.net AUTH 01234567899876543210

If you do not do the 'AUTH', your newly registered nick will expire in 7 days, and you will have to do it all over again. Once you do the 'AUTH', your nick will be fully registered, and you will need to 'identify' to it once every 20 days to keep it activated. If you do not 'identify' to nickserv for 30 days, your registered nick will expire.

2.2 How do I identify my nick?

If you have a registered nick with DALnet's NickServ, you need to 'identify' to it, so that NickServ will know you are who you say you are. To identify to NickServ type:

/nickserv identify yourpassword

Example: if your password is -- AlphaNumeric123456 -- you will type:

/nickserv identify AlphaNumeric123456

Remember, passwords are CaSeSeNSiTiVe.

2.3 Someone is using my nick, how do I get it back?

If you have a registered nick with DALnet's NickServ, and you connect to DALnet and someone is using it, you can 'recover' this nick by typing:

/nickserv recover YourNick YourPassWord

Example: if your nick is -- Newbie -- and your password is -- AlphaNumeric123456 -- you would type:

/nickserv recover Newbie AlphaNumeric123456

After you do this, NickServ will take over that nick for two minutes using it's enforcer service. After the two minute period, you can then change to that nick, and identify to it. Once you get it back, and have changed to the nick and identified to NickServ for that nick, I suggest you do the following NickServ command. This command will prevent others from using your nick on DALnet, even if you aren't on DALnet. Here is what you will type:

/nickserv set enforce on

Once you get a reply from NickServ, confirming that enforce has been set to on, and someone tries to use your nick when you aren't on DALnet, they will be warned they are using a registered nick and have 60 seconds to change to a new nick. If you ever notice all the GuestNicks on DALnet, now you know how they became a GuestNick. They were using a registered nick, and were warned they were using a registered nick, didn't change to a new nick, and NickServ made them a GuestNick.

Section 3 - ChanServ Questions

3.1 How do I register a channel?

Before you register a channel with ChanServ, you must have a registered nick with NickServ, and you must be identified to it.

Refer to Sections 2.1 and 2.2
How do I register my nick?
How do I identify my nick?

If your nick is registered and has been identified, you can proceed with the channel registration.

First check if the channel is registered already, by typing:

/nickserv info #channelname

#Channelname is the name of the channel you wish to register. Look in your 'Status Window' for the reply. If ChanServ returns the info, 'the channel #channelname is not registered', then proceed with the registration.

First join the channel you are wishing to register, by typing -- /join #channelname -- which will take you into this channel, and give you 'Op Status' there. Once you get 'Ops' there type:

/chanserv register #channelname password description

Example: if the channelname is -- mychannel -- and the you choose the password -- AlphaNumeric123456 -- and the channel is going to be a -- file sharing -- channel, you would type the following:

/chanserv register #mychannel AlphaNumeric123456 file sharing

A couple of things you need to be aware of here. First, PassWords are CaSeSeNSiTiVe. Second, alphanumeric passwords tend to be harder for hackers to 'crack'.

Note of caution: once you have registered a channel, be VERY careful not to give anyone else your password! If you do this and someone changes the password so you can’t access it anymore, you won’t be able to do anything about it. Keep your password to yourself!
